Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility

One-of-a-kind hydraulics lab in the U.S. that will launch next generation water scientists. Extreme weather events and growing water demand are having a measurable impact on water availability and use. The tilting flume, a unique 250-foot-long river simulator, sits atop a 9-foot-deep concrete tank. It circulates water through a channel to study sediment interaction. This setup allows observation of how various materials behave in water, offering insights into river dynamics. The lab equipment was $11 million dollars of the contract.

JCCBG, an SBA-approved mentor-protege joint venture between Jordon Construction Company and Brasfield & Gorrie, teamed up to bring this project to life on University of Alabama’s Tuscaloosa campus. The two-story Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) supports training, repairs, and calibration for hydrological equipment that monitors streamflow, groundwater, water quality, and other water resource features that serve the entire nation. It houses, tests, and calibrates all United States Geological Survey hydrologic field equipment.
