Mount Sinai Medical Center, along with the project’s general contractor, Brasfield & Gorrie, marked a significant milestone with the topping out ceremony for the new Irma and Norman Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center, located on its main campus in Miami Beach. This pivotal development has been decades in the making to address the critical need of prompt detection, early intervention, cutting-edge treatments and an increased capacity for oncology services.
Designed to be a visually stunning addition to the Miami Beach skyline, the cancer center’s fluid, freeform design mimics the waves of Biscayne Bay the building will overlook. Bringing those waves to life has required 98 unique panel molds to pour 464 precast panels, ranging from 8,000 to 39,200 lb, that will make up the building’s skin.
Under the surface, the project includes a massive concrete effort, which Brasfield & Gorrie’s self-perform crews specialize in. It’s amounted to upwards of 16,000 cu yd of concrete poured and 2.3 million lb of reinforcing steel so far.
“Topping out marks a special milestone for us. This comprehensive cancer center is crucial for supporting vulnerable members of our South Florida community, and our construction teams continue to put in the effort to build a remarkable facility that will support Mount Sinai’s mission of providing leading-edge care.”
Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Division Manager Mike Peters
With cancer incidents expected to rise in the coming years, the Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center will meet South Florida’s growing need and increase access to true clinical excellence in cancer care for South Florida. The five-story, 234,000 sq. ft. facility will include infusion, exam and lab spaces; an imaging and breast center with CT simulation, X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, PET CT, mammography and DEXA scanning equipment; and a dedicated radiation oncology space that will include two linear accelerators and high dose rate brachytherapy machines.
The Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center will provide patients with access to a full spectrum of clinical expertise, support services, research opportunities and cutting-edge technologies, all within breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay. This state-of-the-art facility will deliver expert clinical care in an environment that fosters healing and well-being. Patients can expect an experience centered around comfort, convenience and the highest level of care.
“Through personalized care and attention, clinical excellence, robust research, and enhanced support services, our expanding, highly skilled medical staff will deliver unmatched expertise to South Florida residents, right in our backyard. Along with the newest technologies and techniques, the Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center will provide hope to those in our community.”
Barry L. Skolnick, chairman of the board of trustees of Mount Sinai Medical Center
Slated to complete in the first quarter of 2026, this hospital will join Brasfield & Gorrie’s growing portfolio of South Florida healthcare projects, including Mount Sinai Emergency Center and Primary & Specialty Care Hialeah, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Kenneth C. Griffin Surgical Tower and HCA Florida University Hospital. The general contractor established its Miami office in 2022 after decades of building in South Florida. The company’s South Florida portfolio also includes industrial, mission critical, commercial, federal, hospitality, multifamily and senior living projects.
